Lamson Institute researchers are investigating whether a drug known as sildenafil, marketed as Viagra Connect, may have effects similar to those of Viagra.
Sildenafil, a drug designed to treat erectile dysfunction, works by relaxing muscles found in blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into the penis and causing an erection.
The results were published in a new issue of the journal “Sexual Medicine” in March, in which the researchers reported they have tested a similar drug in patients with prostatic hyperplasia, also known as prostate enlargement, who have a history of impotence.
They found that patients taking sildenafil had a greater degree of sexual arousal and erection than patients on placebo. This finding is part of the drug’s more-or-less-similar-sex-enhancement effect.
“In this study we show that the ability of a patient to achieve and maintain an erection is different in men with and without prostatic enlargement,” said lead author Ian Read, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Virginia, in a press statement.
Read said the drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction in men with prostatic hyperplasia have similar effects to those used to treat erectile dysfunction in women. “The findings suggest that sildenafil could have the potential to be used to treat the problems of erectile dysfunction in women,” he said.
Viagra Connect was originally developed by Pfizer as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, but sildenafil was soon discovered to work by dilating blood vessels in the penis, causing a stronger erection.
Researchers began using the drug as part of a longer treatment for prostate enlargement in patients who had previously developed symptoms such as painful erections.
They then started testing the drug as a way to treat the problems of impotence in men with an enlarged prostate.
The results of the clinical trial showed that Viagra Connect could be a treatment for erectile dysfunction in patients whose enlarged prostate had not responded to standard therapy.
The researchers looked at data from more than 11,000 men who had been diagnosed with prostate enlargement and who had been treated with sildenafil for three years.
The study found that the medication was able to increase sexual arousal in about 50% of the participants. The results were similar in men who had previously been treated with a similar drug, but men who took sildenafil had a higher degree of erection.
